Back from California

Huntington Beach Pier, wish I was there....

To further prove that I break the normal gaming geek stereotype, I was in California the past week and I....

1. Got a suntan
2. Watched the US Open of Surfing
3. Went surfing myself for the third time.

I know, if I'm not careful they may revoke my gaming geek card. Anyway, a local HB guy won the Open, good for him. Also some friends got to meet Bethany Hamilton, that chick is unbelievable. Seriously, if you don't know her story go take the time to read up. She's amazing and very cool.

So it's back to the Midwest now and waiting for my next trip which is of course, Gencon.

Gencon won't be as fun this year...

Sure there will still be people wearing ill-fitting cosplay costumes and gaming galore but sadly the guys from Dark Matter Studios won't be there. If you're a gamer and you haven't played their Epic Roleplaying Game you are seriously missing out. We stumbled upon this game a couple years ago and after a quick discussion with them I was sold. It's one of the few games I've seen where:

1. There are NO throw away skills.
2. Your character class and my character class can be the same, yet our skills could be wholly different depending on where we are from.
3. Armor acts properly, it protects but slows you down, but not in a horrible AD&D calculate your encumbrance way.

Seriously I could go on and on about how this game rocks, but do yourself a favor and go buy it. HERE. You can thank me later. They got nominated for an Ennie Award last year. Unfortunately they didn't win, but considering they're an indie game manufacturer and were up against big boys like Wizards of the Coast, it was pretty sweet for them to get the nod.

Sadly, they won't be at Gencon, which is a shame as they have a fantastic game and didn't mind throwing back a couple beers and running a game for us. Nothing like playing an rpg with the creators. So if you head to Indy this year, go to the Alcatraz Brewing Company and throw back one for the Epic guys: Chris, Kent, and Andy.

Countdown to Gencon

So this year I really have decided to blog about Gencon. I started this up last year and never got around to it. Sorry, I'm not a blogger. However, I think I can maybe limit my slacking personality enough to actually take some pics and post some comments. The fact that I just learned to tether my iphone should help, won't need to wander for a wireless connection.

Anyway, I tried talking a friend into coming with the three of us this year, he declined with some lame excuses about a wedding. His loss unfortunately, as you'll soon see the only place to find more single people acting awkwardly and wearing uncomfortable clothes than a wedding, is a gaming convention.
